SEMI-PERMANENT  SERVICE  PROJECTS

Our semi-permanent service projects are all related to the "Centro Comunitario R.I de Cancun".

Project No. 1: Medical Services

The first of our sem-permanent service projects is the Medical and Dental service we provide at the Centro. All of the medical and dental services are provided at very low cost, sometimes below the replacement cost of expendable materials, so that the residents of the region will not forego receiving the attention they need.

After five years of operation, in June of 1999 the doctor in attendance performed the first birth at the Centro Comunitario.  (Because of limited resources available, we would always prefer that the patient be transported to the city's maternity hospital, located about three miles  from our Center.)

Project No. 2: Vocational Training.

From the first days of the Community Center's operations we have provided vocational training. The two most popular courses have been Beauticians' Training and Clothing Design & Manufacture. Each is a year-long course of study and application. In some cases, graduates have returned to further their grasp of the subject matter and to learn advanced techniques.

Project No. 3: Literacy Education

We have a history of collaborating with the civil authorities for the purpose of providing literacy education to the residents of the area around our Community Center. The first program was for students who were too old for their level of competence; often these were students who moved to the 'big city' after living where normal schooling was not available. Our second project, initiated in 2002 is Adult Education via Satellite. This program of the Mexican federal government combines modern technology means to teach adult education classes. The classes use both computers and satellite links to enable the students to move from being illiterate to being "E-literate".
